Dear Deb…boy do I need your help,

My parents are recently divorced and do not get along at all.  They struggle to be civil toward one another even for short periods of time. Now that my siblings and I are becoming more and more busy with our own lives, and especially because we may start planning families of our own soon, our holiday schedules make it almost impossible to celebrate holidays separately with each parent.  We don't have the time or the energy for two Christmases and two Thanksgivings, and don't want to be forced to choose or to split up.  Is there a way we can tell our parents to "grow up" and put aside their differences for the sake of the family?

Broken Wedding RingDear offspring challenged by divorce,

Reorganizing family dynamics after a divorce is no easy feat. Here’s my Debie's Advice:

#1: No, you can’t tell your parents to grow up. That is going to be a decision they have to make.

#2: Determine what will work for you at the holidays and do just that. Remember to communicate clearly to both of your parents the reason for your decision. If one or both gets upset, that is their issue to resolve, not yours.

#3: Focus on your own growth. Be an example to your parents of how a family member can successfully navigate the challenges of divorce. We have no control over the choices that other people make, but we do have control over our response to it!
